The S&S Nexus Centre consists of a series of buildings constructed during different time periods (from before 1955 up to 1974), with a total built-up area of approximately 9,000 m². Over the decades, repeated modifications and additions have been carried out, resulting in the creation of a complex and structurally non-integrated load-bearing system. The structural system is of mixed type, comprising reinforced concrete and load-bearing masonry elements, with clearly distinct sections in terms of structural independence, construction phase, and structural behaviour. The new architectural requirements, combined with the need for full compliance with current seismic and regulatory provisions, highlighted the necessity for extended structural retrofitting. Tesseract engineers have been appointed as the structural engineers for the project, responsible for both conceptual and detailed design as well as structural supervision.
